Why does the Beast refuse gratitude from Beauty in the novel by Robin McKinley?

This question is about the novel Beauty by Robin McKinley. Why does the Beast say ';I don't want your gratitude'; to Beauty when she expresses thanks to him? If any one read this amazing novel, please tell me. Thank you! :]Why does the Beast refuse gratitude from Beauty in the novel by Robin McKinley?
He tricked her into leaving her home and her family. He doesn't want her gratitude because he feels guilty about it - his kindness is the least he can do to make up for the exile he imposed upon her.

It is a great novel! My sister has it and I have read it a few times.

I think he might have refused her gratitude because he already feels so guilty for retaining her in his castle.

Good question. I'm not very good at discerning motives.
