Why did my Black Beauty Eggplants turn green?

I've searched and can't find an answer. All of my eggplants where just beautiful except the last two on this one plant. They started out purple as they should and then kept getting greener and greener. They were not soft nor hard. Except for the color they were about perfect size and firmness. Does anyone know what happened and if they are any good to eat? Why did my Black Beauty Eggplants turn green?
Don't eat them now they started to ripen because you left them on the plant too long. They would taste unpleasantly bitter.
