I am doing a diploma in beauty therapy and want to open my own salon next year offering classic beauty treatments as well as holistic therapies. Is it hard to succeed or does it really depend on where you are and your business acumen? Can you make much money opening your own beauty salon?
With the economy crisis right now, people are budgeting as best they can, which means business' including beauty salon's are suffering, however if you advertise your branch at low prices, offers and make it look really stylish and appealing, you'll bring in punters no problem. If they think your place looks legit, posh and top quality looking, yet your advertising treatments at a cheap price it will definately appeal. Look into all your competetor's, do your research and find out what local, and worldwide beauty branch's are offering, and then try and beat them, if possible, by improving their offers and deals. Don't forget you need to make a profit. Your business needs to be unique and distinctive to do well. Just do your research, don't jump into anything straight away, successful business' take years to develop, but you can get there and do really well! There's good money in successful business', and it's a great career. I'd recommend studying business on your own, I'm looking into business myself and I got this package at waterstones named 'Your evening class - starting a small business' and I would really recommend it, it's fantastic! You have audio CD's, work books to go through with the cd's and then a small book to read as well. It's a great help to all kinds of business'. Good Luck xCan you make much money opening your own beauty salon?
The key thing that your success depends on is your marketing strategy. If you promote your salon well and follow that up by providing a good service, you'll do well.
Colleges don't teach you the business side of things. One of your best sources of free help and advice is Business Link. They do a one day seminar on starting in business and then help you put your business plan (essential) together.
The position of your salon does play a part in your success but even if it's on a busy high street you still need to give people a compelling reason to choose you over all the others.
Be careful about offering too low prices. All that does is reduce your margins, which means you have to work even harder to make your profit. Concentrate on what makes your salon different and offer your treatments at a price that gives you a decent return.
The idea of letting out space to holistic practitioners is a good one. It means you can offer a good range of services.
Good luck!
It is absolutely possible.
I work in a fairly successful salon, and while the recession has slowed business considerably we're still going strong. There are many, many variables to consider. Where you are, who you know, what you look like, the services you offer, the prices you charge and the people you employ (or rent working space to) all play a huge roll in making it work.
I would visit as many salons as you can, get one service, and take lots of notes on what you like/don't like.
Good luck!!
one of my mates owns her own salon and she is not making any profit. its not a good time to offer posh treatments as people are budgeting now, unless your angle is to offer these treatments on the cheap, say a fiver for a quick facial, mite bring the punters in. allow your hairdressers to work for you as self employed rather than staff, this way u dont have to pay them salary, they rent the chair from you and you get a commission for each client they do. also keep trendy - make sure you advertise things like cheap extensions, etc or that you will 'beat or match any price'... that sort of s**t. but basically, it aint gonna make you rich. also depends where it is - busy town, or small village? if its the latter, ur gonna struggle.
I think you are capable and know the risks to open your own beauty salon. So why not give it a try.
